When I was at university, our Christian student ministry had a bulletin board called the Zap Board.
It was there for us students to post encouraging notes for other students to find when we went there to hang out between classes.
We loved it! It was so nice to find a Zap from a friend, especially if you were having a rotten day or stressed out from a class.
Guess what…I still have some of my old Zaps hidden away. I love to read them and remember the loving friends who wrote them!
In our digital era, Zaps may be irrelevant.
But Zapping others with encouragement isn’t!
In Deb’s Encouragement for Ladies video series, she asks: How do You Encourage Others?
She says, “Every baptized believer has the Holy Spirit inside of her. So we should all look for opportunities to encourage one another. The Holy Spirit comforts us…The Holy Spirit counsels us through the word of God. It empowers us. It assists us. It spurs us on.
“The Holy Spirit is pouring that Spirit into us on a daily basis. So, we should try to be that for other people.”
The question, then, is how?
5 Ideas for Encouraging Others
Literally, take pen to paper! What can be sweeter than a Zap written in one’s own handwriting? Like Deb said, it an be taken anywhere and read multiple times.
There’s this farm stand across the highway from us, and they offer cut-your own flowers…at only $1.50 for cheery sunflowers and $.50 for zennias, they make giving flowers an inexpensive proposition. Who wouldn’t love a Zap of these colorful reminders of God’s love and beauty?
Go digital.Even if you’re just sending a heart emoji, texting is a quick way to Zap a friend…Let them know you’re thinking about them.
Bring on the food!If you’ve got the time, delivering a meal to a shut-in is the ultimate in encouragement. (That includes scrambling together a rotisserie chicken and fries–which is more my style.) What says comfortmore than a meal?
Be the giver. The Dollar Tree and Below Zero are just two stores that offer inexpensive stuff that you can bundle into a gift for a friend. It’s the perfect pick-me-up for a friend who is in a slump.
These are just a few Zaps to help you pour encouragement and support into the life of a friend, family member, or even a stranger.
What about you?
We’d love to hear ideas for pouring out encouragement in the comments below. Let’s make a list!
Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, Who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God. For just as we share abundantly in the sufferings of Christ, so also our comfort abounds through Christ (II Cor 1:3-5).”
